MIAMI -- An 11-year-old girl has her broken arm in a cast, and the child says her teacher broke it.
Maritza Mendes said that her daughter, Millie Richard, is a student at Highland Oaks Middle School in Aventura. She said Millie told her that on May 5, when she covered her mouth and made a waving motion because she thought one of her teachers "smelled like cigarettes," teacher Pamela Williams grabbed her arm and bent it back. Millie said when she did, her arm "snapped."

Excerpting to be safe based on their copyright information. It's amazing that smokers have been so villified that even children feel it OK to judge them. The teacher should have handled it better, but the parents should teach respect for elders.

Not a contradiction. The general public-school cirriculum is aimed towards the political indoctrination of low-to-mediocre IQ students, and any halfway intelligent child is going to have special needs in that environment.

We had an incident similar in our central Washington school district in the 90's. An elementary student accused her female teacher of breaking her arm. I for one thought the teacher was totally capable of doing such a thing. But it couldn't be proven that the girl's arm wasn't broken prior to coming to school that day, so nothing more came of it. Hope the truth, whatever it may be, comes out on this one.

Only meaningful if the rule for breaking kids' arms requires them to be both exceptional and having 'special needs' at the same time.
Sorry, not meaning to be sarcastic toward you. Just wonder why the author wrote the line thay way without explanation and why they didn't explain how it had any bearing on the event.

Why do I have a feeling that I would probably want to break her arm myself? As well as the rest of this family's?
I recall the day I arrived home from work, smoking a cigarette, and a kid visiting my neighbor walked 50 feet to where I was to ask me to put out my cigarette because he had "breathing" problems.
After I was done with him, he never visited the neighborhood again.
It is amazing the arrogant self-righteousness controlling twits develop and pass on to their next generation of morons!

Bravo! As a long-time collector of words that I rarely have the opportunity to use, I always applaud defenestration. It reminds me of an occasion in law school when a student (with a PhD in linguistics) was asked to discuss a case involving injuries caused by a sofa thrown out a hotel window during a VJ Day celebration. He started by saying "this case concerns liability for injuries caused by the defenestration of a sofa . . . " and two or three of us broke into applause.
It is not, however, my favorite word. Always liked callipygian -- one of the most useful words for a male college student to know.

Hello? I can tell you, as a non smoker, that I can smell my neighbor who is 5 houses down when he is in the yard smoking.
You inconsiderate morons don't seem to get that smoke not only smells bad, but is bad for you. I don't really care if you smoke, just do it where I don't have to breath it. Why is that such a stretch for you 'smokers'? You have a 'right' to smoke, but I don't have a rignt not to?
You remember the first time you smoked? How it made you dizzy? Sick to your stomache? Has it ever occured to you that others that non smokers that have to breathe your smoke feel the same way? Light headed, sick to their stomache?
Oh and big brave guy, beating up on a kid. Bet you went to bed feeling good about yourself.. wow.. you told off a kid with breathing problems. what a tough guy.

Would you advocate a smell test when entering public property? How about mandated scent free detergents and toiletries? Add to that government mandated bath schedules.
Would you walk up to an 80 year old lady and wave your hand in front of your face because she has to much perfume on?
Respect for the teacher means that the child would not have made the rude gestures. But, in you small anti brain, rudeness is acceptable when addressing someone that smells like tobacco!

Do you also want to ensure that your neighbors don't grill food or use their fireplaces? How about making sure those polution spewing cars don't drive by?
You need to go out and by a bubble to live in, that is the only way to ensure you don't have to breath pollutants. Where do you live? If it is in the LA area, you breath far worse with every breath from the smog, than you will ever breath in SHS.

I’m waiting for the day when someone develops a pill for those who suffer from olfactory hypersensitivity. Cut the smokers some slack.
